Starting a New Troop

Many Girl Scout troops begin when a parent, caregiver, or community member sees a need or simply wants to create a Girl Scout experience for their child and other girls in their community. You don’t need any previous Girl Scout experience to get started. GSEP provides the training, resources, and ongoing support you need to lead a successful troop.

Option 1: Girls First

A group of girls express interest in joining. GSEP helps identify parents, caregivers, or community members with interest in leading the troop.

Option 2: Leader First

A volunteer steps forward to start a troop. GSEP then helps recruit girls and families to join.

Option 3: Community Partner Troop

A school, faith community, library, after-school program, or other organization partners with Girl Scouts to start a troop in their community.

What is needed to start a troop? toggle arrow

Starting a troop is easier than you might think! To get started, you’ll typically need:

Two approved adult volunteers
A place for the troop to meet
Completion of required volunteer registration and training

GSEP staff will guide you through each step and help you get your troop up and running.

What support will I receive? toggle arrow

When you start a troop, GSEP and local Service Units will provide the training, tools, and ongoing support you need to get started and feel confident as a troop leader, including

Volunteer onboarding and training to help you get started
Support recruiting and registering girls into your troop
Easy-to-use, ready-made resources like the Girl Scout Experience Box and Troop Year Plans
Access to GSEP Troop Leader Google Drive with additional resources and materials
Ongoing coaching, guidance, and support from GSEP staff and experienced local volunteers

Support an Existing Troop

You don’t have to start a troop to make a difference! Existing troops rely on adult volunteers to help provide a fun, safe, and high-quality Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Parents and caregivers, family members, Girl Scout alums, and community members are all welcome. Whether you want to take on a leadership role or help occasionally, there’s a place for you!

Help Girl Scouts set and achieve goals
Communicate with parents and caregivers
Manage product inventory and distribution
Help coordinate cookie booths

Serve as a signer on the troop bank account
Help manage troop finances and transactions
Complete the troop’s annual financial report

Troop Helpers can pitch in when needed by:

Chaperoning outings and field trips
Assisting during troop meetings and activities
Supervising cookie booths and other troop events
