Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania is making much-needed infrastructure improvements at two of our camps: Camp Shelly Ridge located just outside Philadelphia and Camp Mountain House in Allentown. Our goal is that these pockets of urban oasis can continue to thrive in the coming years, grow the population of girls served and expand the outdoor experience with a wider variety of environmental and educational offerings.
The Girl Scouts were founded in 1912 with the goal of bringing girls “out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air.”
Studies show that outdoor experiences for girls are a vital part of leadership development, learning skills like critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and collaboration. And – in an all-girl setting - camp is their first opportunity to experience true independence with the safety and freedom to take risks and discover who they want to be.
