Your Director

Your Director
April "Ape" Beattie

Ape is the Director of Adventure and Water/ Camp Mosey Wood at GSEP. It is a very fitting role, because Ape loves to climb! She has been belaying and running high challenge courses for fifteen years. She even introduces the new challenge tower at Mosey Wood as “Ape’s Playground.” Ape also enjoys the water; she has been on several weeklong canoeing trips, spent time in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, and, of course, loves Mosey Wood Pond.

The summer of 2021 will be Ape’s 29th year at a Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania summer camp. She grew up going to Camp Tweedale in Oxford, PA. She spent nine summers at Tweedale as a camper and twelve on staff. She had positions that ranged from unit counselor to sports director to assistant and program director. After Camp Tweedale closed its doors in 2013, Ape made the tough decision about where to go next. She chose Camp Mosey Wood, where she became the assistant director in 2014 and has been the camp director since 2015. Ape loves the Girl Scout movement and is a lifetime member.

Ape graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Physical Education and holds a teaching certificate. Ape has used her passion for teaching throughout her Girl Scout career, continuing to teach camp staff.

About Camp

About Camp

Camp Mosey Wood is a 425-acre beauty sitting in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.  Adventure and water abound through this property.  A thirteen-acre lake hosts plenty of room for boating including row boating, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and sailing.  Mosey Wood Lake also hosts a plethora of fun activities including the AquaTower, a Wibit obstacle course, and an AquaClimb climbing wall.  After splashing around, there is still plenty of adventure to be had, from bouldering to climbing walls to a low challenge course to a high challenge course.  Adventure in the air culminates with dueling zip lines after pushing through a seventeen-element challenge tower!  There is more adventure to be had between water and sky.  Traditional camp activities like archery, outdoor cooking, arts and crafts, environmental educations and more are done each week.  The adventure never ends at Camp Mosey Wood!

Our Staff

Our Staff

The staff at Camp Mosey Wood comes from all walks of life.  From our high school aged aides to our fifty-plus year-old staff members, all are at camp for the girls.  Many are still in school, some are teachers, and others take off part of their full-time jobs to come to camp each summer.  We have a mix of domestic and international staff, those that grew up as Girl Scouts, and those who are new to Girl Scouts. Staff goes through a week and a half long training to prepare for campers.

Our Favorite Tradition

Our Favorite Tradition

Wishing Candles is one of the strongest camp traditions at Camp Mosey Wood.  Campers decorate a wood cookie and place a candle on it to create their wishing candle.  On the last evening (Thursday) of each week, campers and staff wait at the entrance to their unit for the tiki torch procession.  As the procession reaches the waterfront, campers and staff sit on the beach.  Poems are read, stories are told, and songs are sung as each camper places a wishing candle on to the lake.  The campers make a wish and hope to see the wood cookie the candle was placed upon on the beach in the morning, as that is a sign their wish may come true!

2019 Summer Camp Testimonials

"I truly want to say thank you. My daughter's experience at camp was everything I wanted for her. She LOVED it. She connected with counselors, she had adventures with her friends, she made new friends, she pushed herself phsyically, and had great outdoor adventures. I trusted that she was safe. This was such a wonderful experience."

"My daughter enjoyed it and I'm so glad for the wonderful experience she was given and to make friends from all over!"

"I think the staff and counselors do a wonderful job. My daughter is never ready to leave and she is always excited to start planning camp for the following year."

"We love that she has the opportunity to be away from family and manage being away and making decisions on her own and meeting new friends she wouldn't meet otherwise. We LOVE camp!"

"My girls come home happy. No electronics, fresh air, new and old friends. They always end up with deep connections with their counselors. If it the highlight of their year, every year."

"Our daughter really enjoys her camp experience every year. I think the value for the cost is excellent. Camp is awesome!"

"Camo provides a safe place for your daughter to grow - she will challenge herself and become more aware of the world around her."

"My daughter had an amazing trip. She said there was some bugs, but she went off to camp not knowing anyone and had an incredible week. She challenged herself to try new things and came home feeling confident."

"My daughters first words when we picked her up were, can I come back next year. I thought she was going to be homesick because this was her first time away at sleep away camp. I was totally wrong."
