Girl Scout Week 2014

Girl Scout Week March 9-15

Throughout the long history of Girl Scouts, certain traditions remain meaningful and important and are still practiced today.  Every year, the week containing Girl Scout Birthday (March 12) is bookended by celebrating the connection between Girl Scouts and their faith. Girl Scout Week begins the Sunday before March 12 (a day known as "Girl Scout Sunday") and extends through the Saturday following March 12 (a day known as "Girl Scout Sabbath").

Since its founding in 1912, Girl Scouts has enjoyed the support of religious organizations. Together we have enriched the spiritual lives of Girl Scout members, each of whom strives from the perspective of their own personal belief to live up to the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Girl Scout Birthday: March 12

The Girl Scout Birthday on March 12 commemorates the day in 1912 when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization's first 18 girl members in Savannah, Georgia. This year, 2014, represents our 102nd birthday!

Girl Scout Sunday: March 9 and Girl Scout Sabbath: March 15

Girl Scout Sunday/Sabbath is a time for Girl Scouts to reflect upon the importance of the words, "On my honor, I will try to serve God" from the Girl Scout Promise. Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath can also be a time for girls to learn about other faiths, or to share their beliefs with their sister Girl Scouts.

Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath give girls an opportunity to be recognized as a Girl Scout at their place of worship. Girls may also perform a service, such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath is also a great opportunity for Scouts to organize a service project or other activity for the congregation. See below for a list of suggested activities, such as hosting a cookies and milk party after the service with Girl Scout cookies to try and buy! Girl Scout Sunday/Sabbath patches for your troop are also available at all of our GSEP shops!
